Do you enjoy the luxury of not having to manually open elevator doors? Then give credit to Alexander Miles. He was an African- American inventor and businessman. While on the elevator with his daughter, he became concerned with the risk of his daughter falling down the elevator shaft in case the elevator doors were not closed properly before the elevator began to move. The passengers or individuals working the elevators were to open and close the elevator doors manually by pulling them open. Mr. Miles decided to connect a belt to the elevator cage that could cause the doors to open as the shaft came in contact with drums above the floors. On October 11, 1887, he was able to patent his idea of automatic opening and closing elevator doors in Duluth, Minnesota.
